Walter Roberts came to Colorado in 1940 with his bride, Janet. Dr. Roberts first operated a high-altitude observatory near Climax, Colo., and later moved to Boulder, where he became the founding director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. NCAR is not only the leading edge of environmental studies in the country, but is also among Boulder’s major employers.
